From 1 st January 2011, the content of this page will be placed under the portfolio Justice, Rights and citizenship and transferred to its website.
Strategy for equality between women and men (2010-2015) was adopted September 21, 2010.
inequalities between women and men, violate basic human rights. They also represent a heavy burden on the economy and an underuse of talent. Strengthening of gender equality can generate economic and commercial benefits.
Strategy for 2010-2015 builds on the experience of Roadmap for equality between women and men (2006-2010) and consists of a comprehensive framework through which the Commission is committed to promoting gender equality in all its policies.
The strategy highlights the contribution of gender equality to economic growth and sustainable development and promotes the establishment of a dimension of gender equality in Europe 2020.
The thematic priorities are from the "Women's Charter"
  • equal economic independence for women and men equal
  • remuneration for work of equal value;
  • equality in decision-making;
  • dignity, integrity and an end to violence based on gender;
  • promoting gender equality in Outside the EU
  • horizontal issues (gender roles, law and governance tools).
It follows a two-tiered approach involving the mainstreaming of equality between women and men in all policies and EU activities (gender mainstreaming) and specific measures. For each priority area, key actions and detailed proposals for change and progress are described in an annex of the communication.
The new strategy will strengthen the cooperation between various stakeholders and to improve governance. It will prepare the ground for future cooperation on gender equality with Member States and with the European Parliament and other institutions and bodies, including the European Institute for Gender Equality.
